Student Experience

Below are unedited student statements of their experience taking COM 2310 with Professor Thomas. Read more below.

Spring 2021 (mid-COVID)

I really enjoyed how thorough the professor was. There was never a moment where I was confused or felt like I was unsure of what was going on or what I was doing. I attribute this all to the attention to detail that she has in her live teaching as well as the resources and rubrics that she puts together. This is the first class that I have had in my three years at the university that I felt the most comfortable in.

Winter 2021 (mid-COVID)

Coming soon

🍂 Fall 2020 (during COVID pandemic!)

This class allowed me to create my own portfolio website where I can display all of my accomplishments from my undergrad. It has made me more confident in my work and I feel like I can proudly show all of my accomplishments because I now have a platform to use. I had the freedom to create a website that shows who I am and how I want to be portrayed. I came into this class knowing nothing about web design and I am finishing the class very happy with my growth.

If you're looking to build your online presence and work with a professor who is genuinely invested in their students learning, this is the course for you! It's a great class and the workload is manageable.

I absolutely loved this class and all that it entailed. I recommended it to my friend who is taking it next semester. I learned a great deal and had a lot of fun doing so! Thank you!

This class has been so fun and full of learning! Learning how to build a website I think is something most people should learn because regardless of what field you study, it fits into every category! I have learned so much about web design and the technological side of it.

I definitely do not regret taking this class. Coming into web design was a little scary not knowing what to expect but I'm grateful for my experience and for professor Thomas making this course comfortable and understandable. 10/10 recommended

This class is a great way to express your creativity and show yourself as a professional at the same time. Although I am a public health major, I found this class to be helpful and I will certainly use my website portfolio in the future.

This class was great. It taught me how to dive deep into how a website is suppose to look like and how it is suppose to function. A website is like a visual business card and for me being a Videographer/Photographer it's how I can show my work. So in so many words this class was great and easy to understand.

This class is absolutely amazing and I would recommend it to anyone regardless of their major. It teaches you how to build a website, but the best part is that it teaches you how to market yourself in a way. You learn how to make a website that shows off your work and academic career. This is great for anyone looking to expand their knowledge on ways to showcase their work!

Before this class I considered myself pretty sufficient using WordPress, however, after learning the content taught to us by Professor Thomas, I can now see how much I was missing and how much more there is for me to learn. The concepts in this class are useful for future web design needs and applicable to a variety of situations. I have already used the skills I acquired in this class to impress at my workplace!

This was one of my favorite classes throughout my years at WSU! Professor Thomas was extremely organized and clear on all assignments. I never felt confused or overwhelmed. I also loved having the creative freedom to build your website how you envisioned. I definitely recommend this course and I will be keeping my website active after graduation!

❄️Winter 2020 (during COVID pandemic!)

"My experience was amazing. Even though I worked with web design and layout, there were many things I wasn't aware of, and a lot of other things that helped me improve. Professor Thomas is a great professor, and she makes sure to explain step by step so everyone can understand. This was my favorite class of my last semester at WSU."

"This class was a ton of fun and professor Thomas was incredible. Coming into this class, I had no idea about web design whatsoever and this class taught me a bunch of criteria required to make a quality website. I struggled at first with the program but once the content was broken down, it was much easier. I am super excited to continue building my portfolio site as my career progresses."

"Take advantage of Prof Thomas' expertise and use this as a real opportunity to establish or enhance a website. Never be afraid to ask questions, the whole point of school, and this course is to learn! I spent over an hour one night trying to change my header - without success!!! I got so frustrated I actually yelled at my cat :( The next week in class, I asked Prof Thomas for help and she showed me how to do it in literally under 90 seconds! After that, any time I got stuck, instead of getting crazy frustrated, I just asked for help and I never stumped the professor!"

"This class is super helpful. Not only are you learning skills that will help you out down the line in your career, your website can act as an online resume and looks very impressive to potential employers. My website helped me land a social media internship."

"This class taught me a lot of useful tips that I currently implement in my freelance business. Tonya Thomas is a practical instructor that truly wants you to do well and thrive. She gives you useful tools that can actually be implemented into your site to take it to the next level. I sometimes go back to the canvas page to find the reading materials that she assigned."

"I recommend starting early and making a plan for your site. I planned out each of the areas I wanted to highlight then complied the documents I wanted to include."

🍂 Fall 2019

"I really enjoyed the experience I had in Professor Thomas's Intro to Web Design class. It was interesting to see how the world of web design worked, the good and bad of web design, and how to go along the creative process of making a website from the initial idea to the fully fledged website. I felt compelled to create a website that looked good, and I actually found myself surprisingly engrossed and invested in my website(s). By the end of the class I felt that I had created two websites that I could keep and maintain for future use."

"Professor Thomas class was very useful! Prior to this class I had minimal knowledge on how to navigate Wordpress, but after taking her class I feel confident in my abilities to create an appealing and informative website using Wordpress. I'm very proud of my personal portfolio and plan to add to it as I gain more work experience!"
